Regulatory review: Upcoming regulation affecting biocomposite use and recycling in Finland

The ABiCo project developed biocomposite materials and knowledge about them, to support the transition towards a circular and sustainable economy. This report examines the current and emerging regulatory framework relevant to the development, use, and end-of-life management of biocomposites. Attention is given to the automotive, construction, and electronics sectors, which represent key potential markets for ABiCo materials. The analysis identifies major policy drivers, including the European Green Deal, Circular Economy Action Plan, Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, and sector-specific legislation that increasingly promote recyclability, material transparency, durability, and circular product design.

The report also evaluates regulatory requirements affecting selected ABiCo material constituents and highlights challenges related to recycling infrastructure and end-of-life management. The findings provide guidance for the future development and commercialization of ABiCo materials and other biocomposite materials, helping to ensure regulatory compliance and support market uptake in a rapidly evolving policy environment.
