Abstract
A carpooling application by Blox Car was piloted in the city of Espoo, Finland between September 2018 and January 2019. This paper presents results of the pilot. The pilot was aimed primarily for commuting and work related trips during the day, but leisure trips and other purposes were not excluded. The assessment of t he pilot included looking at the fairly modest amount of completed trips and a survey directed at those showing interest towards the pilot. The main barriers for participation in the service included lack of supply (drivers) and demand (riders) as well as reliance on the schedules of others and committing to pre determined schedules. The pilot excluded financial transactions from the service, which added another challenge for motivating people to participate in offering rides. Overall, the pilot showed that while carpooling is supported and considered useful as a concept, it is challenging to win over users.
