    Abstract

This paper reviews some of the main achievements of the ESPRIT III Project 6276 "Hierarchical Optical Interconnects for Computer Systems" (HOLICS), a three and one half year project completed at the end of 1995. The aim of this project was to develop a hierarchical optical interconnect for computer systems, delivering communication rates beyond those achievable with electrical interconnects and to demonstrate and verify its benefits in a prototype implementation of a heterogeneous system.
