Abstract

This paper outlines the Finnish nuclear waste program and describes studies performed in Finland related to the migration of radionuclide from a repository for nuclear waste in crystalline bedrock. Research is being conducted on the basic chemistry of the bedrock and repository and on sorption and diffusion of radionuclides on common Finnish rocks and minerals and backfill materials. The knowledge and data generated is systematized and employed in safety analyses and models. Achievements in these areas are outlined and future plans will be discussed briefly.
