Abstract

A number of portable online devices were tested, and the most suitable ones adapted to be used at paper mills. Certain handheld sensors were found to be suitable to be used in papermaking conditions to measure basic parameters, such as temperature, conductivity, pH, and redox potential. In this paper, the handheld devices were found useful in determining the performance of biocide programs and in determining a colloidal charge. In general, they can be applied in a number of applications. The performance of biocide programs using halogen containing biocides can be optimized using ion-selective online analysis of halogen or ammonium ions. Any biocide program based on oxidative or reductive chemicals can benefit from optical measurement of dissolved oxygen. The analysis of dissolved calcium and turbidity indicating colloidal charge are now available as portable online applications.
