    Abstract

Evenness of the road surface is one of the most important properties of the road. Good evenness gives good driving comfort and also the traffic safety is naturally better. Uneven road surface causes dynamic loading forces especially by heavy vehicles to the road structure and can decrease the life time of the whole road. Other important parameters are e.g. roughness and distresses. This paper discusses the Principles of Monitoring the Road Surface; Finnish Road Surface Monitoring Devices; Comparison of PTM, Roadman, and Dipstick Devices; and the Dynamic Truck Index.
