    Abstract

The full potential of composite materials has not yet been realised. This is due to lack of fundamental understanding and a lack of confidence in material behaviour, particularly for primary structural applications. Innovative design tools are required to make more efficient use of composites for future primary structural components. This is an essential goal for industry to ensure competitive position in the next generation of advanced structures and components. The objective of this literature study is to examine the analytical and numerical predictive methods for the strength of a cracked fiber-reinforced plastic composite. Especially methods based on fracture mechanics are studied. Due to the fracture behaviour of composites the problem is very complicated. Most of the work reported in literature has been done to assess the effect of delaminations on the behaviour of a fiber-reinforced composite. This creates the basis for the more general predictive methods for strength and lifetime. Also, some similarity can be seen with the analyses of glued joints. Finally, the special techniques required to numerically determine the effect of a delamination on the strength of a fiber-reinforced composite laminate are discussed.
