Abstract
Carbon nanobuds, single-wall nanotubes having covalently bonded fullerenes, are presented here as a novel way to chemically functionalize nanotubes. The fullerenes offer reaction sites for adding appropriate chemical groups to the nanostructure, as shown by density-functional theory calculations and experimentally by the covalent functionalization of the nanobuds by hexyl amines.
