Abstract
Hexenuronic acid groups (HexA) in kraft pulps react with permanganate, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone and peracids. HexA does not only increase bleaching chemical consumption in C-, D-, Z- and Paa-stages but is converted to products that are harmful in different aspects. A mild acid treatment hydrolyzes HexA strikingly selectively. Simultaneously the kappa number of a kraft pulp may decrease by several units. Only traces of other carbohydrate structures are dissolved. Cellulose is depolymerized to a limited extent but the selectivity of the treatment is still as high as in oxygen stage.
