Abstract
The Finnish national battery strategy 2025 states that public and private research infrastructures for the battery cluster should be networked and mapped, and that any gaps should be identified. To support the initiative, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has ordered this study from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd.
The study mapped the current research infrastructures in Finland. Infrastructures are included in the appendix of this study including general description and more detailed technical description. Report includes description of the current state of infrastructures. Gaps and development targets were identified.
Based on the study, several actions are recommended, which improve the basic prerequisites for research in the battery cluster. Actions include investments into new equipment, such as battery safety testing laboratory, mechanical separation of batteries for recycling and analytical capabilities for battery material research. In addition, improvements are suggested for data utilization by creating common rules for utilization of data and executing a jointly used data platform for battery cluster. Different testbeds and living labs are also included, such as wide testbeds for electric vehicle charging. Nationally, it is important to increase cooperation and know-how. Research infrastructures can be used to draw international research projects and invest-in activity to Finland. Therefore, it is also suggested to network battery cluster infrastructures and present the capabilities to potential international partners.
