Abstract

In 1981 the Ministry of Trade and Industry made a decision to start a five-year project to raise the R&D level of semiconductor technology in Finland. The project is one of the biggest research efforts ever made in our country. The project was planned and carried out in close cooperation between the microelectronics industries and the Semiconductor laboratory of the Technical Research Centre (VTT). Major investments, CMOS processing facilities with design and mask making were concentrated in the Semiconductor laboratory. IC design activities were started also in the Electronics laboratories of the Technical Research Centre as well as in Oulu University and Tampere University of Technology.
