    Abstract

Sfumato painting technique is proposed as an artistic metaphor for creating a shared understanding about safety and risk in complex safety-critical multi-stakeholder projects. The aim is to illuminate a mindset and suggest approaches for softening potentially detrimental effect of sharp dysfunctional boundaries between and within different project parties, which might impair quality of communication, coordination, and collaboration and impact safety.
