Abstract
It is generally perceived that the safety and reliability information produced during a plant or production line's life cycle could prove to be very useful to operations personnel if presented in a situation-based and structured format. The aim of this study was to develop an information system to manage the risk and abnormal situation information of the process, and especially be able to present it to the operators as the need arises. The system that was developed supports the storage and processing of unstructured knowledge about abnormal situations in a way that allows the user to obtain situation-based advice when it is really needed. The results of this study indicated that the system is useful in the process operation environment, especially in the case of rare process situations and also for inexperienced operators. The system allows for the rapid assessment of a situation, and the problem can be quickly remedied. This may lead to improved process safety and could minimise economic losses by reducing the process breakdown as a result of faults.
