    Abstract

The paper looks at the development trends in publishing. The whole production chain has undergone great changes since the desktop publishing revolutionised publishing processes. Lately, the consumers have got an ever-increasing choice of digital devices and content to select, and they also have very high expectations. Commercial content should be of high quality so that consumers are willing to pay for it. Publishers must therefore look for ways to add more value to their content. The concept of smart content is presented as one future option. The building blocks for creating smart content are presented and a small example relating to learning content is presented. An important aspect in adding and utilising smartness is to utilise and support web-enabled processes for content consumption and enhancing.
