Abstract

Solidification simulation of castings using the three-dimensional finite element method was studied. The commercial programs, PIGS for the enmeshment and ADINAT for the heat transfer analysis, and pre- and postprocessing programs developed for these studies were used. The test casting used in the casting experiments and in the simulation was a gray iron 'T'-junction tube with flanges. Two different meshes were created and temperature changes in the casting and in the mould were calculated using ADINAT. In the casting experiments time-temperature curves were measured in 15 points of the casting and the mould. A good agreement between the calculated and measured values was obtained with the finer mesh. The density of the mesh was found to affect significantly the calculated solidification times.
