Abstract
This chapter starts with a summary of the current state of global textile production volumes followed by the current status of textile waste and prospects of textile recycling in numbers. Next, the role of product design and the relevance of textile fibre type and composition data for better recycling and lifecycle management is explained. Sorting options are presented with information on their suitability for different fibres and subsequent applications. Current and future textile identification technologies are presented with technical details. A summary of technologies used for the identification of fibre type, fibre composition, colour, and structure is given. To conclude, the authors discuss how the requirements for textile fibre identification technology will develop in the future.
