Abstract

The presentation includes the description of factors influencing speed of rail traffic in Finland. In our country it is not allowed to have level crossings if the maximum speed on rail is more than 140 km/h. In Sweden they can have automated level crossings even on rail with the maximum speed of 200 km/h. In road traffic the tendency is towards lower speed limits and other measures to lower the speed of traffic. On rail the situation is contrary. There is demand for high speed trains all over the world. One reason for that is the congestion on roads. On rail the automatic train protection (trains can not speed and stop automatically on red signal) is all day life, in road traffic automatic speed control is in future. Comparisons between speed management on road and rail are included into the presentation.
