N2 - The objective of this project was to disseminate the new design recommendations from the recently completed ECSC funded project, 'Development of the use of stainless steel in construction' (contract 7210-SA/842). The principal deliverables were: Second edition of the Design manual for structural stainless steel. This European design manual was updated to include new and more economic design guidance and its scope was extended to cover circular hollow sections and fire resistant design. The design manual was also revised to make reference to current standards and data in new European standards issued over the last 10 years. The design manual was translated and printed in German, Italian, Spanish, Finnish, Swedish and French. Design examples. Some 10 new design examples were prepared to illustrate the application of the recommendations in the design manual. These were published with the design manual. Web-based design facility. An online facility for designing cold-formed structural stainless steel sections was developed (http://www.steel-stainless.org/software). The web software links to an onIine, fully searchable version of the design manual. National workshops. Workshops were held in seven countries to launch the design manual. The workshops described the background and content of the design manual, worked through design examples, discussed applications of stainless steel in construction and demonstrated the web software. An extensive pubIicity campaign involving mail shots and advertisements in journals has resulted in nearly 2 200 requests for the design manual being received. Feedback from users of the web software has been very positive.
