Abstract
The presentation deals with the topic, whether STI-policy may smoothen or even reverse economic downturns. The starting point is R&D investments and their societal effectiveness. On the basis of existing evidence one might as well sceptical as optimistic on the possibilities on STI-policy. The policy is not able, however, to affect short-term cycles but most likely long-term economic developments.
