Abstract
• Surface roughness and surface porosity affect nanocellulose coating coverage and uniformity • A hydrophilic substrate promotes the adhesion between the coating layer and the substrate • Water absorption capacity of the substrate also affects the coating quality obtained • Based on the current study, "a smooth, but porous, and highly hydrophilic substrate" seems to be an optimal choice for nanocellulose coating application.
