    Abstract

Digital engineering tools and procedures have had a positive impact on the European manufacturing industry. However, to design a sustainable manufacturing system, a multitude of system dimensions has to be jointly optimized. We propose an integrated simulation tool helping to maximize production efficiency and to balance environmental constraints. Lean manufacturing, identification and elimination of waste, production losses as well as environmental considerations are needed during a sustainable manufacturing system design phase. Engineers designing a manufacturing system need decision support since sub-optimisation otherwise will be more likely to occur.
