Abstract

Display devices may utilize flexible light bending layers to generate 3D images and/or light fields. These flexible layers may be components of volumetric display devices or flat form-factor display devices. Flexible light bending layers may comprise flexible layers of lenses or light emitting elements, and may include refractive and/or diffractive flexible layers. Flexible light bending layers may be controlled by actuators to generate propagating or traveling waves that, in synchronization with light emission, generate virtual depth of projected 3D images. One display apparatus may comprise: a light-emitting layer; an array of collimating microlenses; a flexible light bending layer; and an actuator operative to generate a traveling wave in the flexible light bending layer to generate an oscillation in the orientation of the flexible light bending layer relative to each of the collimating microlenses.
