Abstract
Among Finnish SMEs, there are many wonderful examples of
successful breakthroughs into the international markets -
and behind these are stories of persistence and risk
taking, mistakes, strokes of luck, expertise and amazing
experiences. International markets can open out in a
variety of ways - sometimes a company proceeds along its
path of internationalisation according to detailed plans,
in others quick trials and reversals
are the most effective way of moving forward. The
strength of SMEs lies in their flexibility and ability to
react, as well as in their speed at learning anew. The
publication, 'Tarinoita kansainvälistymisen poluilta'-
'Stories along the internationalisation path -
Internationalisation of an SME - successes and
challenges', highlights the diversity of the
internationalisation of SMEs. Its cases describe
the steps taken in the internationalisation process by
five companies, the choices they have made, and the
background to their challenges and successes. The
following table sums up the five cases. We have learned of
these cases through DIMECC REBUS programme
(www.dimecc.com/dimecc-services/rebus/) and VALIT project
(www.valit.fi). The cases are presented in the following
table.
