Abstract

There is a clear need for a better understanding of how to realise opportunities related to digital and platform-based ecosystems in different industries. The paper focuses on the first steps of collaboration, aiming to create a new business ecosystem enabled by a digital platform, providing a new way of co-creating value based on shared data related to buildings. Here the dynamics of co-innovating and emergence of a new ecosystem are examined from the perspective of tensions. Five tensions were recognised. This research contributes to the growing body of ecosystem literature particularly by examining both conceptually and empirically the design-driven approach to enhancing collaboration and overcoming tensions. Further, contributions are made to the topical theoretical debate on innovation practices in ecosystems by providing an illustrative empirical example of early dynamics in exploration and exploitation.
