The Emergence of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: A review of the Literature

    Abstract

    Despite the growing attention afforded to Entrepreneurial Ecosystems by scholars and academics alike, our conceptualisation of the phenomenon remains incomplete. In this paper we address this knowledge gap by focusing on Entrepreneurial Ecosystem emergence. Through a systematic
    review of the literature that includes detailed analysis of 165 papers, we
    identify the actors involved in the emergence process, together with facilitating factors, and the mechanisms driving emergence. Our findings show that besides entrepreneurs, established local and foreign firms, financiers, the regional government, accelerators, and research organisations play a pivotal role in the emergence of the ecosystem. Furthermore, supporting activities, local history, and available human and knowledge resources are some of the factors facilitating emergence.
