Abstract
From the viewpoint of natural analogue studies, the Palmottu U-Th mineralization at Nummi-Pusula in south-western Finland provides an excellent opportunity for studying radionuclide transport within groundwater pathways in fractured crystalline bedrock. The project consists of two phases. Phase I (1 January 1996 to 31 May 1997) was intended to assess the processes connected with the flow of groundwater in the bedrock. Phase II (1 August 1997 to 31 August 1999) is aimed at identifying and quantifying processes related to radionuclide mobilization and transport. This report presents the results of Phase I and provides recommendations for future work. Both regional and local hydrostructural models of the Palmottu area were developed. A structural model was produced first; this was progressively modified and refined on the basis of hydraulic testing and hydrogeochemical considerations during the course of the investigations. Flow modelling at regional and local scales was also undertaken.
