Abstract
The Symposium on the Role and Application of Food Science and Technology
in Industrialized Countries was held September 15 17, 1981 in Helsinki Espoo,
Finland under the patronage of the International Union of Food Science and
Technology (IUFoST) and the Organization for Economic Co operation and
Development (OECD).In this publication the opening and plenary papers as well
as the reports of the three workshops on Food Processing and Manufacturing
Food Wholesaling and Retailing, and Catering/ Foodservice Industry are
published. In the opening lectures the aims of the Symposium are described. The
plenary papers contain the expert opinions of the speakers on the various
issues of the Symposium. The workshop reports analyze the subject matter in
terms of the three major sectors of the food economy, and introduce the
recommendations printed in italics. The papers contain opinions and
recommendations of internationally highly competent experts and expert groups
and are thus a good guideline for further efforts and subsequent measures. The
organizers and the editors hope that this publication would serve national and
international expert and administration bodies, the various food sectors and
companies, and educational and research institutions in their tasks when
developing strategies and programs for the 1980's.This publication will be
distributed to the member countries of OECD, to the member associations of
IUFoST and broadly to the scientific and professional bodies interested in
food technology and economy.
