Abstract

Price ratios between electricity and fuels have favoured increased use of electricity both in space heating and in industrial processes. This paper describes the consequences of this development over the last ten years, together with the direction of future activities. Electric space heating is spreading from conventional use in single family and terrace houses to multi-storey buildings. Bivalent use of electricity and fuels is the mode of operation. Electricity in district and area heating is also increasing, with the use of heat pumps and electric boilers on the rise. The economics of electric heating and the role of different organisations in promoting its use are discussed.
