Abstract
This paper deals with the conversion of methoxybenzene, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, 1-ethyl-4-hydroxy-benzene, and 1-benzyloxy-4-hydroxybenzene in an aqueous alkaline solution during heat treatment (300°C or 350°C) under pressure (16–20 MPa) in the presence of a reducing atmosphere (carbon monoxide or hydrogen). The product mixtures were analyzed by GLC and GPC. The influence of process conditions on the various types of reactions which occurred is discussed.
The study was carried out in support of the development of a process for producing liquid fuels from spent pulping liquors.
