    Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show the methods and challenges related to aroma barrier testing. A method developed for measuring diffusion of aroma compounds through packaging materials is introduced. This method can be used for comparing existing materials and for developing new ones. For example, our studies showed that the surface porosity of the base paper affects the aroma barrier of polyethylene coated papers. Secondly, the base polymer and the use of nano-sized pigments affect the aroma barrier properties of dispersion coatings.
