    Abstract

Safety management plays a central role in organisations striving for improved health and safety. Safety management offers a systematic means of achieving continuous safety improvements, and has its roots in safety-critical industries. Safety management focuses directly on the structures and functioning of management and includes strategic decision making and operational actions to prevent accidents and other harmful events. Safety management systems have been successfully implemented for years in the rail, aviation and maritime transport sectors. Safety management is a relatively new concept in road transport, offering potential for substantial safety benefits.
