Safety management plays a central role in organisations striving for improved health and safety. Safety management offers a systematic means of achieving continuous safety improvements, and has its roots in safety-critical industries. Safety management focuses directly on the structures and functioning of management  and includes strategic decision making and operational actions to prevent accidents and other harmful events . Safety management systems have been successfully implemented for years in the rail, aviation and maritime transport sectors. Safety management is a relatively new concept in road transport , offering potential for substantial safety benefits.
