    Abstract

This chapter includes a summary of the history and recent trends in wireless communications especially on mobile cellular systems. The basic transmission problems and solutions are summarized in the physical and network layers. The fundamental limits define the upper performance bounds for spectral and energy efficiency. Regulation and standardization is needed so that the finite frequency resource is used efficiently, and the systems work together even in different continents. We expect that in the future the radio systems will be more intelligent but the level of cognition will depend on the available energy resources.
