Abstract

The paper describes work on three coatings, aluminium bronze, titanium nitride and lead, which can be used beneficially in engineering practice. Pin on disc tests have revealed that TiN coatings rubbed against TiN coatings give a very low friction coefficient and low wear rate. Against steel surfaces metal transfer increases the coefficient of friction, and also the wear rate, of the uncoated surface is high. Aluminium bronze coatings serve as good antigalling films against steel, giving a low friction value. Lead coatings can be used as solid lubricants between lightly loaded steel surfaces.
