Abstract

This paper examines the role of value-chain Scope 3 data in decision-making for sustainability in the manufacturing industry. Scope 3 data refer to the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the upstream and downstream activities of a company’s value chain. The paper presents a qualitative case study of four companies from the wood fibre-based value chain, which includes the forest, machinery, chemical and retail sectors. The paper identifies the needs and challenges that the companies face in collecting, analysing and using Scope 3 data for their sustainability strategies and targets. For example, the quality and accuracy of supplier data and Scope 3 emissions were significant challenges and future development points. The benefits and opportunities of the value-chain Scope 3 data for decision-making are also discussed. This paper contributes to the literature on sustainability data utilisation and Scope 3 in the manufacturing industry.
