    Abstract

This study was carried out in 2009 as an analysis of the winter traffic in the Bay of Bothnia during two winters: 2006 and 2007. The purpose was to analyse the performance of the ships in actual operations and correlate this with icebreaker assistance information and ice conditions. The ship performance was acquired from AIS (Automatic Identification System) information recorded by the Swedish and Finnish Maritime Authorities and the icebreaker assistance information from the icebreaker information system, IBnet. Ice information was taken from daily ice charts produced by the Finnish Ice Service (now part of the Finnish Meteorological Institute). The analysis was performed at VTT under the supervision of a steering group consisting of Ilmari Aro and Jorma Kämäräinen from the Finnish Maritime Administration, Ulf Gullne from the Swedish Maritime Administration, Ari Seinä from the Finnish Ice Service and Ville Kotovirta from VTT.
