Abstract

Possible ways of monitoring the quality of welds in mechanised gas metal arc (GMA) welding by monitoring certain welding parameters are described. In addition to the common parameters of welding i.e. voltage, current, wire feed speed and travel speed, a system was developed capable of monitoring welding energy, short-circuiting frequency, proportional arc duration and arc sound emission. Particular attention was paid to the sound emission monitoring and measuring system. The arc sound emission was correlated to the weld defect formation.
