Abstract

The publication is the proceedings of the XIII European Annual Manual Conference on Human Decision Making and Manual Control, held on June 13 - 14 in Espoo, Finland. The conference continues the tradition established in 1981 for bringing together researchers from different disciplines of man machine interaction analyses in an informal way. The main goal of the conferences has been to provide a forum for discussions of ongoing research. The themes and papers of the XIII conference represent adequately the diversity of the man machine interaction field. Under the title Man machine task allocation the general problem of division of labour between human and technological components of the man machine system is discussed. This problem is also manifested in a profound question of the users' trust in a machine system. The second theme is Human reliability, and under the title new methods of defining reliability of human activity are presented and evaluated. Expertise based decision support is the third theme. The common issue in this area is the utilization of expert knowledge in aiding decision in design, re design and operation of production processes. Examples from different industrial processes are presented. The fourth title is Information presentation and operator support, and the focus of the theme is on the problems of presentation of adequate information of the process for the user. The last theme Decision making and learning in operative and co operative context introduces new methods of analysis and empirical results of studies on operators' decision making in industrial practice.
